Less than a week after it made public its intention to constitute a committee of experts on the contentious Telangana issue, the Centre on Wednesday announced a five-member committee headed by former Supreme Court Judge B N Srikrishna.

The committee would deliberate on a mechanism for a separate Telangana state and consult all sections of people, political parties and groups in Andhra Pradesh.

The terms of reference, which would include the issues that the committee would deliberate upon as well as the timeframe within which it would be expected to submit its report, would be finalised by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in consultation with Srikrishna.

Srikrishna had earlier headed the Commission of Inquiry which investigated the causes and indicted those responsible for the Mumbai riots of 1992-93.

The other members of the Committee are Prof Ranbir Singh, Vice-Chancellor, National Law University, Delhi, Dr Abusaleh Sharif, Senior Research Fellow, International Food Policy Research Institute, Delhi, Dr (Ms) Ravinder Kaur, Professor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT, Delhi and Vinod K Duggal, former Union Home Secretary, who will be the member-secretary of the panel
