In a shocking end to the 60-hour kidnap drama, 10-year-old Vaishnavi’s charred body was found from a boiler in a car garage in Autonagar on the outskirts of Guntur late on Monday evening.

It is believed that the girl was killed and her body dumped in the boiler within an hour of her abduction on January 30. The scene at plot No. 445 in Autonagar where the body was found was horrifying as the body was charred beyond recognition. The abductors apparently burnt Vaishnavi’s body in a bid to destroy evidence.

The family broke down on hearing the police confirmation about Vaishnavi’s death. Three unidentified youth had abducted the girl on the BRTS Road in Vijayawada when she was on her way to school along with her brother Sai Teja in a car. The assailants killed the car driver Lakshman Rao who resisted their bid, while 12-year-old Sai Teja managed to escape from their clutches.

Sources said the abduction and murder was planned by close relatives of the girl’s father Palagani Prabhakara Rao, a liquor baron in Vijayawada, over a property dispute. Prabhakar’s brother-in-law Venkat Rao was the mastermind, it is learnt. Sources said the cops got clues on Monday evening when Venkata Rao confessed to the crime. “He revealed that they had eliminated the girl on the same day,” confirmed a senior police official. Sources said the abductors killed the girl in an industrial unit belonging to one Srinivas Rao, who was in good terms with Venkat Rao. Analysts said it was surprising that the police did not grill close relatives though their role in the abduction was suspected from Day One. “The investigators focused on them since no word came from the abductors even 48 hours after the incident,” an analyst said.

The stunned cops rushed special teams to Autonagar after Rao’s confession. The teams searched the area and found the girl’s body around 7 pm. Guntur district SP Sankha Brata Bagchi confirmed that the body was that of Vaishnavi. It is believed that the abductors brought the girl’s body in a plastic container from Seethanagaram and dumped the entire container in the electric boiler in Sarada industries (plot No. 445) on Jan 30. Police are now suspecting the role of the industry owner Srinivas, a relative of Venkat Rao, in the killing. The boiler is used to melt iron scrap to make bolts and nuts.

Police believe family feud led to the killing. “He (girl’s father) has to blame himself as he did not come out with facts on the day of the kidnap,” a senior police official said. Vijayawada police commissioner K V Rajendranath Reddy also visited Autonagar.

The girl’s father suffered a stroke and her mother Narmada swooned after hearing the shocking news. Prabhakar’s first wife Venkateswaramma went into hiding, fearing attacks from neighbours.
